A page from the past.....    Pike County, IN Poor Farm          

Shown above is a photo of the Pike County, IN Poor Farm just before it was torn down.   It was in existence for more than 100 years and the Poor Farm served many people in Pike County during its time.  It was located mid-way between Winslow and Petersburg on Highway 61, just south of Junction 56 and at the present time the grounds are now used for the Pike Central Middle School and Pike Cental High School.    Pike Central serves the entire county of Pike County and replaced high schools in Winslow, Petersburg, Otwell, Spurgeon and Stendal.   The first year of operation for Pike Central was during the school year 1975.
