| Pictured above is Bill Lewis with his school bus that he
drove on the number 7 bus route for 52 years. His "bus
kids" were very special to him. He knew every child on his bus
and usually drove their parents at one time. He always checked
to see why a child wasn't ridding the bus to make sure they were not sick
or in some kind of situation that kept them from attending school.
In the forties and fifties, he also drove the Winslow basketball team to
all their basketball games and loved that experience as he was an avid
Eskimo basketball fan.
In this photo, Bill shows off his first bus and is wearing a uniform
but that was for when he worked at his gas station on main street where
the bank is located today. In early 1944 he was scheduled to
leave for the war and sold the gas station and found a driver for his bus
route since he owned the bus. After he was no longer scheduled for
the draft he worked in Evansville at the Modification Plant near the
airport. He also worked at the Wilkinson Lumber Company and later
bought it and re-named it to the Winslow Lumber Company. It always
thrilled him when one of his "bus kids" had graduated and moved
away from Winslow would stop in to see him at the Lumber Yard.
Near Christmas, Bill would always give a brown bag usually with an orange,
some nuts, candy bar, a candy cane and small toy to each "bus
kid". He enjoyed giving those out as much as the kids
enjoyed receiving them. |
