Dewey Burkhart, age 80, went to be with his
Lord on Saturday, Feb 4, 2006, at the Deaconess Hospital in
Evansville. Dewey was a decorated World War II Army veteran, having
received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star and several other
medals. He retired from Peabody Coal Co. in 1989.
Dewey was born in Pike County, IN on Aug 11, 1925, to Quillis
and Delta Mae (Deffendoll) Burkhart, who preceded him in death along with
two brothers, Gifford and Don Burkhart, and a sister, Imogene Lindy.
Surviving Dewey are his wife of 56 years, Earlena (Hedges),
WHS Alumni Class of 48, three children, Richard Burkhart and spouse
Rosalinda of Guam, Vickie Suzanne Williams and spouse Phil of Greencastle,
IN, and Sherry Lynn Oxley and spouse David of Tennyson, IN; eight
grandchildren, Brent and Chris Williams, Shane Oxley, Jenni Toops, Holly
Stephens, Jason and Madison Burkhart and Gina Quintanilla; six Great
Grandchildren, Adrianna and Taylor Oxley, Tyler and Tanner Toops, Joe and
Matthew Quintanilla; brothers Burl and Lester Burkhart and sisters,
Carolyn Ray and Linda West.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wed at the Christian
Fellowship Church at 4100 Millersburg Rd., Evansville, IN with the Rev Dr.
Spencer Downs officiating. Burial was in the North View Cemetery
in Elberfeld. Visitation was from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the
Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City, IN and from 10 a.m. until
service time Wed at the church.
