Kenneth "Tot" Nelson, Winslow High School Alumni Class of 1939
at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame with two of his players when he
coached at Plainville, Indiana from 1954 thru 1958. At the
occassion, Lloyd Bateman was inducted along with 13 other Hoosier hoops
greats into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame for 2008.
Jerry Osmon was there to see his former team mate and was also a member of
the Plainville High School Midgets. Bateman was a 6-5 center for the
Midgets in an era when the impact of being 6-5 was more akin to the inpact
of a 7-0 in today's game. That, along with a soft shooting touch,
allowed him to dominate during the mid-1950's, when the Midgets compiled
an 81-12 record from 1954 - 1958, including a sectional championship in
1956, Bateman's sophmore year. Bateman finished his career with
2,078 points. Plainville High School never had more than 85
students. Plainville had a proud history of basketball which saw the
Midgets suffer just 12 losing seasons on the hardwood in 46 campagins
before the school closed its doors for good in the spring of
1965. Lloyd Bateman thanked Coach Nelson not only for making
him into a basketball player, but that he made him into a man. Lloyd
also thanked all the wonderful teamates he had in his four years at
Plainville High School. |
