Dredge Boat Cleaning Patoka River at Winslow
Dredge Boat Cleaning Patoka River at Winslow
This is a picture of the dredge boat just below the Winslow bridge starting west to clean and straighten the Patoka River to allow barges to navigate the river, hauling grain, chiefly, and produce to the Wabash/Mississippi ports and markets.  The Winslow river marketing trade hit its peak during WWI (1917-18).   This dredge was cleaning the Patoka in the early 1920's and was visible from the porch on the home of Alonzo Willis.   Mr. Willis lived on the hill right behind Charley Reiner, who ran the feed mill (and did for many years).   Alonzo worked at the mill.
