Wilbur John Fiscus Sr
Winslow Alumni Class of 1941
December 29, 2008

 

Winslow, Ind. --- Wilbur John Fiscus Sr. was born May 29, 1923, and passed away on December 29, 2008.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and 4-wheeler enthusiast.  He attended the Brenton Chapel Church of Christ.

He served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945.  During WWII, he was assigned to Company B, 180th Infantry Battalion stationed in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.  He was honorably discharged after being injured for the third time.  Wilbur was awarded a Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters, and a European Theater of Operations Ribbon with four Bronze Stars.

After being discharged, he married Alethea Mae Lawson on October 26, 1945.  To this union was born Laura Mae, Larry Wayne and Wilbur John Jr.

Wilbur worked as a Conservation Officer, and deputy recorder, before retiring from Whirlpool Corporation.  He was also a charter member of the South Patoka Volunteer Fire Department.

Wilbur is survived by daughter, Laura Carlton; granddaughter, Kristina Willis; great-grandson, Cody Willis, daughter-in-law, Kim Fiscus; siblings, Freida Marie Oxby, George Arthur Fiscus and his wife, Opal, Robert Doyle Fiscus and his wife, Jo, Nina Ruth Chapman Griffin, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife, Alethea, sons, Larry Wayne and Wilbur Jr., his father and mother, Fred and Alma (Wolfe) Fiscus, and son-in-law, William Carlton.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 2, 2009, at 10 a.m. CST, at the Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City, with Brother George Fiscus officiating.  Burial was at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Winslow.

Friends visited from 4 until 8 p.m. CST Thursday, January 1, 2009 at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home.  Military rites will be provided at the graveside by VFW Post No. 1147.
