Info: The Kindergarten class was
not part of the public school. Parents paid a small tuition fee to the
teacher. Daily classes met in the empty building west of the Winslow
Hardware Co. store, shown in the background. The school room was
heated by a single coal burning heater. Toilet facilities were across
the alley at the rear of the building, along with those for the other stores
along Center Street - Wells' Grocery, Fred Millard's Barber Shop, and
Julian's Grocery. William "Bill" Cooper owned the hardware
store, later re-named the Quality Hardware.
Note the team of harnessed horses
(extreme left, with one not visible) at the hitching post. This area
remained until 1950. In the background above the horse, the roof,
porch and southwest corner of Brenton's Funeral Home is visible.
