Coach Woody Neel - Winslow High School Coach - 1972 - 1973

Neel Compares Northern Indiana Basketball with that played in the South;  Has Eskimos playing winning ball.

Woody Neel, who coached with great success at Holland High School for four years before moving north to Anderson, has returned to the south and this time at Winslow.  He is shown talking during a timeout with guards, John Quick (11) and Nick Smith (15).

Neel inherited a tall, but inexperienced Eskimo team.  He had two returning veterans -- 6-0 senior Nick Smith and 6-5 junior Gary Elliott.

The three newcomers who round out the starting five for the Neelmen include a 6-5 junior Larry Barr, 6-2 junior Steve English and 6-0 junior John Quick.
Coach Neel is a native of Deansville, KY.  He attended high school at Owensboro, KY.  He played college ball at Kentucky Wesleyan.   After graduation Neel launched his coaching career at Caneyville, KY.  His first Caneyville team marched into the 16-team Kentucky State Finals and claimed third place.

After two years at Craneyville and two more at Hopkinsville, Neel moved on to Indiana.  His four KY teams had won three sectional three sectional titles, one regional title and one of his teams (63-64 Hopkinsville) was rated fifth in the state for most of the season.

Neel moved from Hopkinsville to little Holland High School, a school with a rich basketball tradition but a limited (less than 150) enrollment.

Steve English (24) above had earned a starting job with the Winslow Eskimos. The Neel-coached Holland teams won 3 Patoka Valley Conference (PVC) titles and two Huntingburg sectional crowns.  His 1967-68 team compiled a 20-0 season record led by All-Stater & All American Don Buse.
After four great seasons at Holland, Neel went to Anderson for a two year stint before moving to Winslow.   His WHS record in 1973 was 17-3.
