Richard L. (Dick) Farley - April 13, 1932 - October 2, 1969
Farley died at age 37 after having a heralded basketball career. As a junior at Winslow he led the Eskimos to a 20-0 season in 1948-1949 before they lost to eventual state champion Jasper in the sectional. As a senior he led the Eskimos to a sectional championship defeating defending state champion Jasper on the way. They also won the regional and first round of the semi-state before losing to eventual state champion New Albany in the final game of the Bloomington semi-state. It was the first of many games he would play at the Indiana University Field House. Farley was named to the All-State squad and went to Indiana University to play for Branch McCrackens Hurryin' Hoosiers. Farley was a starter for Indiana as a junior in 1953 when the Hoosiers won the NCAA. He was named All-Big 10. According to the IU Sports Info Dept, he remains 23rd on the all-time scoring list with 1,378 points totaled in just three seasons. At that time the NCAA did not allow freshman to compete on the varsity. Farley also served in the
Air Force. He played professional basketball for the Syracuse Nationals an
Detroit Pistons.
