Winslow Eskimos Basketball Trivia Tidbit The Colors of Purple and Gold were chosen by the class of 1916. The name Eskimos came about in the early 30's.Winslow won sectionals in 1923, 1924, 1925, 1941, 1950, 1951 & 1954 Winslow won regionals in 1950, 1951 & 1954 Before Winslow was assigned to the Jasper/Huntingburg sectional in 1925 they played at different locations. In 1924 they advanced past the sectional level and were defeated by Martinsville who went on to win the State Championship in 1924 led by John Wooden who later became well known as coach of UCLA.
Winslow was the first small-school team in the state to be ranked high (third
in 1950).
The Eskimos had to play all of their games on the road in the '50 and '51
seasons because their new gym was under construction.
The Eskimos of 49', 50' and 51' seasons won 70 of 76 games.
Only two players played on all three teams (49'-50'-51') that ran up the 70-6 record - Dick Kinder and Gary Alley Tidbit submitted by Hugh

Winslow fans take their basketball games serious and sometimes would get carried away. Back during the days of Winslow great "Red" Robert Smith, the Eskimos lost a game and all thru the game it was a heated battle. The two referees of this game were A.C. Shimmy Sermersheim and Arnold "Bumps" Berger both from Jasper. After the game the State Police escorted Shimmy and Bumps out of town via the trunk of a car since they were somewhat concerned for their safety.......Tidbit submitted by Ron Semersheim and confirmed by his father, Shimmy Sermersheim, who was one of the referees slipped out of town. Shimmy passed away Sept 18, 2000. The following Eskimos were leading scorers at the Jasper/Huntingburg Sectionals during the period of 1925 to the late 60's. 1933 - Sherl Kinder was leading scorer in 33 sectional - 3 games and total of 41 points 1941 - Red Robert Smith was leading scorer in 41 sectional - 4 games and total of 42 points. 1950 - Dick Kinder was leading scorer in 50 sectional - 3 games and total of 47 points. 1951 - Dick Kinder was leading scorer in 51 sectional - 3 games and total of 57 points. 1954 - Tom Nordhorn was leading scorer in 54 sectional - 3 games and total of 59 points. 1956 - Larry Meyer was leading scorer in 56 sectional - 3 games and total of 73 points.
