Basketball - W.H.S. - 1916 - 1917 Season Recap
Our Basketball team for this
season, while, it did not win many games, did some splendid playing, and showed
marked ability in Basket Ball. Our best games were with Otwell,
Ireland, Spurgeon, and Stendal. We defeated the strong Stendal team which
was considered the best in this locality. This was the only defeat Stendal
received during their season.
We lost to Spurgeon and Otwell by close scores,
but defeated the Ireland team, champions of Dubois County.
Davis our largest man played forward during the
first part of the season, but shifted to center during the latter part. He
was a good hard player.
Wood, who was one of our most reliable forwards,
always played a hard consistent game.
Sims, our substitute forward was noted for
accuracy in goal shooting.
Curtis, center, during the first part of the
season and forward latter part was a good steady player and he was a good goal
shooter.
Barnett, was on the team through the entire
season. He was small but fast and distinguished himself as a guard.
Wilder, guard, was a new man at the game but soon
proved his ability. In several games he held his man scoreless.

Our game at the Tournament was played Friday
evening, March 9, 1917, with a strong Otwell team. It was the first game
of an evening session. It was close and hard fought from start to
finish. But owing to our bad luck in making the ball stay in the basket,
Otwell won by a score of 19 to 15. Otwell later defeated the fast
Princeton five, with a large score as they did us. Princeton was
considered one of the best teams in the Tourney and we had reasons to be proud
of our team even though they didn't win.
The prospects are extra good for a strong team
next season.
