Winslow Elementary Third Grade Hears About Winslow As
It Once Was
Bob Hunt, Class of 1952 and Past President of
the WHS Alumni Association and John Dedman, Class of 54 and webmaster of
this webpage visited the Winslow Elementary Third grade classes at the
school on Wednesday, May 23rd as guests of Jackie Henson, Third grade
teacher. It was an interesting talk and discussion session
with the third graders and some insight of how Winslow was years ago was
given to the students. Old yearbooks of Winslow High School
and photos were displayed and passed around for the students to
view. It is hoped this can be an ongoing project with
another visit next fall.

Winslow Community Center
Needs
Help Increasing Their
Endowment
Fund For The
Community Center
|
 |
|
|
The Winslow Community Center,
housed in the former Winslow High School Gym
that was dedicated in 1951, operates in
the red every year in spite of many hours of
dedicated volunteer labor. In
November, 2004, an endowment fund for the
Center was formed, to be administered by the
Pike County Community Foundation. The
fund started with a slow growth, but took off
during 2005 when an anonymous donor offered
$10,000 in matching funds for the next $10,000
from other sources. Thanks to efforts to
match that offer, the fund now has a little
over $34,000 in it. Only the
proceeds from this fund are used for
operations. The principal is left so that
there will be income for the Center
indefinitely. The Center is well
used. But there are not enough paying
groups to fully support it, using currently
competitive rates. This is the
last building standing that was once part of our
beloved Winslow High School. Aside from
our memories of it and our love for it, it has
a unique roof structure not found in many
buildings. Let's give it the
support it needs. Let's boost that
$34,000 up to $100,000. That is what it
will take, at current costs, to properly fund
the operations of the building. Make
your donations to: Pike County Community
Foundation, memo--Winslow Community Center.
Mail to: Pike County
Community foundation, 714 E. Main St,
Petersburg, IN 47567.
The Center is used on a
regular basis for: Open Gym (Sundays), walking
(general public) Computer Learning
Center, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Kiwanis Club,
Lions Club, private parties, class and family
reunions, showers, receptions, community-wide
dinners, flea markets, auctions, various
committees meetings, blood drives, flu vaccine
drives, cooking class, euchre club, Bible
Study, dances, music.
